Westcott Business Incubation Centre
I’ve got only a business idea. Can I apply?

Yes, the BIC supports very early-stage start-ups and helps them develop their business ideas into a strong and compelling business proposition.

Can I apply if I don’t have a registered company yet?

You can still apply, but you would need to register your company before the start of the incubation programme.

My business is not registered in the UK, can I still apply?

Unfortunately, we can only provide support to UK registered businesses.

My company has been registered for more than one year. Am I eligible?

We usually only accept companies that have been trading for less than a year. Nevertheless, there are some special cases in which we can accept older companies, and this is assessed on a case by case basis. For more information, please contact us.

My business is not directly related to the main technology areas of the centre, should I apply?

We specialise in start-ups focused on space propulsion and related areas, 5G communications and autonomous systems. In these last two areas, the focus is put on downstream applications. If you are in doubt about the suitability of your business, we are more than happy to answer your questions before you apply.

Can I apply for the BIC and for a Research Grant at the same time?

Yes, you can apply to both at the same time, as the Research Grant and the Incubation Programme are independent and complementary.

I am not based near Westcott. Am I expected to work from the centre every day?

We understand that as a start-up, you need flexibility to grow your business and therefore, you are not expected to be based in the incubation centre. Nevertheless, you would need to participate in the BIC events, provide the information about your business progress and documents required for reporting to our funding organism, and be proactive on the use of the support provided by the Centre.

Research Grants

What can I use the money for?

The ERDF has specific requirements with regard to the costs that are considered eligible, details of which can be found in our guidance document.

Are these grants match funded?

No, they are not match funded. But you will need to have sufficient available cash to pay for the products and services you’d like the grant to support.  You will then be able to claim the money back once this has left your bank account (this is called defrayed expenditure).

Can I use the grant to cover the costs already incurred or for on-going activities?

No, the research grant will only cover costs from purchases or activities taking place after you have received the offer letter from us.
